The big news this week is that the framing on Groovy Ranch has begun in earnest. Check out the picture below.

The second big news is that window and door decisions had to be made and Mrs. Groovy and I were on the exact same page. Here’s what we decided.

Windows: For the windows, we decided to go with what our plan called for (see snippet from our plans below). Double-hung, with one grid divider between the glass on the top sash and no grid dividers between the glass on the bottom sash. This is the modern farmhouse look and we like that simplicity.

Exterior doors: For the exterior doors, we decided to forego the 8-foot doors our plan called for and go with the normal six-foot, eight-inch doors. To make the top of the front exterior door align with the top of the front windows, we decided to add a transom window.

The third big news is that Mrs. Groovy met one of our neighbors. Yep, Mrs. Groovy checked out a hair salon in Louisburg, and Tammy, the woman who cut her hair, turned out to be the mom of the family that lives just beyond the trees that line the back of our property. Man, I knew Louisburg was small. But I didn’t know it was Mayberry small. The good news is that Tammy appears to be a very nice person and she’s already invited us to her Halloween Party. Things just get better and better in Groovyland. [Mrs. Groovy here. Coincidentally, Tammy’s husband knows our builder, Terry. And he works as a handy man, which may come in…er…handy.]

Final Thoughts

Okay, groovy freedomist, that’s all I got. Sorry about another week of no fighting. Believe me, we’re trying. But after 16 years of marriage, it appears our taste in design has finally melded into one. Pathetic.

Oh, shoot, I almost forgot. Mrs. Groovy and I appeared on a Countdown to FI roundtable with Mr. and Mrs. WoW, Mr. and Mrs. MSF, and, of course, Mr. and Mrs. CTF. Check it out. It’s a stone groove.

  1. Just back from a trip to the mountains. Glad to see the walls are coming up. Heck, I missed nearly a week so you probably have the windows in by now. I love that you both already have a Halloween invite. You can wear your groovy cat masks, right?

  2. Groovyland, I love it!! It’s unfortunate the boy will now have to duck when entering your front door 😉 but I love the windows. So fun that you already know a neighbor and they are inviting you to things. Very jealous of the small-town vibes over there. I’m so excited for the progress!

    1. I really hope it’s not a costume party. We won’t be living in our home yet by Halloween. We’ll still be living with Mr. Groovy’s parent. It’s one thing to look like idiots to your neighbors, but quite another to look like idiots to your family and your neighbors.

  3. Your small town story reminded me of when. We moved to rural Kentucky. We stopped in the local pharmacy (w a legit old fashioned ice cream parlor) and the owner said “Y’all must be the folks who bought Rocky & Amy’s house”. Indeed we were, and we always felt welcomed in that little town.

Nice to see sticks in the air. Congrats on the progress!

    1. And I’ll bet they always referred to you as the folks who bought Rocky & Amy’s house even when they knew your names.

I appreciate small town America more than I ever could have thought I would, especially coming from Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Long Island.

  4. Wow, the ranch is progressing nice and fast! Glad to hear all is good in Groovyland. What’s on tap for this years Halloween costumes?

    1. Thanks, Brian. We’ll need to find out if it’s a costume party. I’m more into the candy. Maybe we can get Vicki and Jeff to do an encore of impersonating the Groovies? But I’m afraid that will be lost on our neighbors.

  5. Man, you are moving forward! Nice work. Must look good to have the frame up.

We are going to finalize permitting this week (supposedly) and hope to break ground within the month. I am having some anxiety about costs (over $1,000,000) and how the contractor is requesting funding (post to go out Friday) but continue to dive right in. Fingers crossed!

    1. I’d probably have a little anxiety, too. We’ll watch for your post.

Most builders here do a draw schedule with the bank or lender holding the construction loan. We don’t have a loan or a mortgage so it’s a little different. Terry told us he’s waiting until at least the framing is done to bill us. He likes to be ahead of the schedule and only bill for material/work that has been completed.

      Here’s an interesting article.

    1. So cool, right? And their dogs already seem to know us too. They predominantly stay outdoors in a fenced in area beyond our tree line. They used to bark at us but now they think “oh, it’s them”.

  6. Congrats on the house starting to take shape! That is super exciting! And we had such a blast on the podcast with you guys! Good times all around. Hope to do it again.

    1. Thanks Mrs. Wow! It’s getting real, for sure.

The podcast was so much fun. Just winding up Mr. Wow and Mr. CTF and seeing them spin out of control is priceless.

    1. I like what I’m imagining those hammered copper doors to look like. I also like the red doors. We’re thinking about that.

We’re not starting off with storm doors but may add them at a later time, especially since we’re not choosing doors with glass in them. Glass in doors is very common down here but with my northerner instincts for safety, I prefer a solid one.

    1. Could be. She owns the hair salon. And you know how wild those salon ladies can get (especially the grandmas that work there).
