I’m not a fan of gerrymandering. Like counting illegals and non-citizens in the census, it monkey-wrenches the will of the people and artificially inflates the power of the majority party.
Sadly, we never bothered to constitutionally outlaw gerrymandering. And since we have devolved into a super low-trust society, that constitutional oversight isn’t being corrected anytime soon.
But thankfully we no longer have to tolerate racial gerrymandering. Grotesquely shaped super-majority black districts are now verboten. Likewise with super-majority white, Hispanic, or Asian districts. We can still gerrymander, as long as we do it without regard to race.
Not everyone sees the demise of racial gerrymandering as a good thing, however. ABC News reached out to MLK III and he was aghast.

Really? Echoes of Jim Crow? Are there now going to be “separate but equal” polling stations for white, black, Hispanic, and Asian Americans? Is black voter registration going to plummet to 1940 levels?
And this is why we’re a super low-trust society. Instead of saying gerrymandering is an abomination, and we all need to come together and constitutionally outlaw it, ABC News used its considerable voice (via MLK III) to sow tribalism.
You cannot hate the legacy news media enough.
