I know I’m weird. The YouTube recommendation algorithm says so. Just look at some of the things it served up for my viewing pleasure this past week.
1. Prison Talk. Does YouTube know something that I don’t? Is Mueller coming after me when he’s done with Trump?
2. Taxi Sitcom. I love Taxi. I consider it one of the best sitcoms of all time. But it hasn’t been on my radar in a while. In fact, the last time I even thought about it was when I used one of its obscure characters—Mr. Givens—to make a point on this blog way back on August 27, 2015. So why am I getting this recommendation now? And why did YouTube send me a clip of Alex going to a gay bar? Again, does YouTube know something that I don’t?
3. Janis Joplin Meets Raquel Welch. Yes, in 1970, Janis and Raquel appeared together on the Dick Cavett Show. The greatest female rocker of all time on one side of Mr. Cavett, and the most beautiful Hollywood starlet of all time on the other side. And, happily, YouTube’s short clip doesn’t disappoint. Raquel is indeed beautiful. So too is Janis in her own way. Such a sweet person. And not nearly as homely as my foggy memory supposed. She’s actually kind of cute. And did you notice her smoking? This was very common back in the 60s and 70s. Practically every adult smoked, or so it seemed. And it was very tough being a kid—especially for me with mom and dad chain smoking on long car drives. I nearly got emphysema travelling between New York and Boston.
Final Thoughts
Before I go, I need to do two big shout outs. The first goes to Mr. and Mrs. WoW from Waffles on Wednesday. Last month, they pitched the idea of doing a remote Talking Trash. And at first I thought they were nuts. But with the help of Google Hangouts and an app called Callnote, I was able to watch Mr. and Mrs. WoW pick up garbage on a California beach, have a real-time discussion with them, and record the whole thing. Amazing.
SO THANK YOU MR. AND MRS. WOW! I can’t say enough about those guys. I liked them before they proved the feasibility of a remote Talking Trash. Now I like them even more. Truly wonderful people.
The second big shout out goes to David Huberman. David is a good friend of mine, and he wrote and performed the song at the beginning of the below Talking Trash.
David actually wrote “Another Day in Paradise” for a sitcom pilot. But, sadly, the pilot wasn’t picked up.
The good news is that David was gracious enough to let me adopt “Another Day in Paradise” as the official theme song of Talking Trash. He’s one righteous dude.
Okay, groovy freedomist, that’s all I got. I hope you enjoy the first ever remote Talking Trash. Have a great weekend. Peace.
