A couple of weeks ago, I came across the following video in my YouTube feed. Check it out.

YouTube Artist’s Rendition of Mickey Mouse Pop Art

And at the conclusion of the above video, I said to myself, “I can do that.” And since it’s too damn cold to work on my scrap-metal bison right now, I decided to make this winter a winter of indoor painting and pop art.

Here’s the story of my first attempt.

Step One

I went to Michael’s and purchased brushes, acrylic paint, and a 12 x 18 inch canvas.

Step Two

I went online and purchased a cheap projector from Amazon so I could project my Mickey Mouse drawing onto the 12 x 18 inch canvas. Here’s a picture of the projector.

It cost $96.06 (including taxes and shipping), and it was very intuitive to use. Turn it on, pop in a thumb drive with an image on it, and then follow the menu instructions.

Step Three

I did a google search of Mickey Mouse images and found the image that the YouTube artist used for his painting tutorial.

I then did a pencil drawing of this image.

Technically, I could have used the google image of Mickey Mouse for my projection. But that struck me as cheating. How can I say I painted something if I traced a drawing that someone else drew?

Step Four

I then did the canvas background by spreading a bunch of different colors around with a spackle knife and adding a little Jackson Pollack flair.

Once the background was complete, I projected my Mickey Mouse pencil drawing onto the canvas and traced its outline with a sharpie. I then used black, white, red, and yellow paint to fill in Mickey’s form.

Here’s what my pencil drawing looks like projected onto a wall.

Here’s my rendition of Mickey Mouse pop art.

And here’s a side-by-side of the YouTube artist’s Mickey Mouse pop art and mine.

Not too shabby for a ham-and-egger.

Final Thoughts

Okay, groovy freedomist, that’s all I got. What say you? I say YouTube is a godsend for the curious and self-motivated. I wasn’t looking to make this winter a winter of indoor painting and pop art, but thanks to YouTube, that’s what this winter is going to be. Have you turned to YouTube to pique a hobby or interest? Let me know when you get a chance. Peace.

    1. Thank you, my friend. I’m working on a pop art chicken now. Hopefully, Mrs. Groovy will allow me to hang it in the family room when it’s done. Hope all is well in the Peach State. Give my regards to Jackie. Peace.
