Mr. Groovy’s book—or his opus, as we call it in Groovyland—The Groovy Guide To Financial Independence (How To Escape The Tyranny Of Mandatory Toil In Fourteen Years Or Less)is now available on Amazon!

Prior to marrying in our 40s, Mr. Groovy and I were financial morons. The Groovy Guide to Financial Independence tells the story of how Mr. Groovy and I de-moronified our financial lives and journeyed to financial independence in “a mere fourteen years.”

And just how did we do this?

By embracing good financial habits.

What’s In the Book

If you’re a follower of this blog, you’re familiar with the fact that Mr. Groovy has some very original ideas about money and life. He discusses many of them in the book, including:

  • Personal Responsibility Warrior (do you have what it takes to be a PRW?)
  • Strategic Ignorance
  • Half Normalism
  • False Wealth
  • Geoarbitrage, Spatial Arbitrage, and Egotrage
  • Talking Trash
  • Big Freedoms vs. Little Freedoms

Mr. Groovy also shares his thoughts on other topical issues, such as:

  • The College-Industrial Complex (which Mr. Groovy thinks is a scam)
  • The Healthcare-Industrial Complex (which Mr. Groovy calls a joke)
  • Honor, Freedom, and Financial Independence (which Mr. Groovy believes are all intimately linked)

We Get By with a Little Help from our Friends

To keep things really interesting, we reached out to nearly twenty personal finance bloggers and asked them to contribute content to The Groovy Guide. In each chapter, you’ll gain wisdom not only from Mr. Groovy but from one or more amazing individuals who are also expert about the FI journey. But wait, there’s more. Financial luminary Fritz Gilbert of the Retirement Manifesto set the tone for The Groovy Guide with a very impressive Foreword, and, we’re proud to say that The Groovy Guide received advance praise from several personal finance superstars—Michelle Schroeder-Gardner, Philip Taylor, Financial Samurai, and JL Collins. How freakin’ groovy is that!

We are truly honored and blessed that these awesome people took time out of their very busy lives to help us. The personal finance community is truly the most gracious and inspiring community in the blogosphere.

And we are truly honored and blessed to have you as our readers.

Thank you all for putting up with our yapping about this book for the past six months or so.

And yes, I DID refer to it as “the book no one would read,” but that’s only because I was frustrated. My husband, the “delicate genius,” has gotten away with murder the past six months. We’ve moved twice and are building a house. Those things don’t happen by themselves. They require a lot of decisions. And every time those decisions swelled in number and complexity, Mr. Groovy conveniently retreated to his writing oasis so he could work on his “opus.” Oy! Meh!! Sheeesh!!!

Well, I have to admit—it was worth it.

I hope you will find it worth it too and get your copy of The Groovy Guide to Financial Independence today. And if you enjoy what you read—please be sure to leave a review on Amazon.

P.S. To those who’ve contributed to the book or helped with editing, we’re sending you a link to an Amazon gift copy of the book as a small token of our appreciation.

  1. I bought my copy last night from a bad connection on our trailer trip. I’m on chapter 2 and loving it. The approach of looking at your honor and health first really sets the stage for facing life’s realities and encouraging the reader to man up, so to speak. And that’s coming from me — a girl! Congrats on a great accomplishment!

    1. Thanks for the purchase and for thinking of us while traveling!

Suze Orman had that corny saying “People first, then money, then things” but there’s truth in it. If you’ve got no honor and you’ve got bad health you’ve got bigger concerns than merely finances. We all need to man up, or at least to put on some big-girl/big-boy pants.

  2. Publishing a book is an accomplishment anyone should be proud of. Congratulations to you on reaching a historic milestone. This likely puts you in 0.1% of the entire population who can claim to have achieved this feat. That’s no small task.

    1. Thanks! I was unfamiliar with that statistic. My husband’s not only a “delicate” genius, he’s a plain ‘ole genius too.

    1. Thanks, you guys. The feeling is mutual.

The oak floors are in and we just picked a stain. Wouldn’t you know this hurricane is coming in our direction, though. Terry has to put in some temporary locks so the doors don’t blow off and do some other chores to secure the site.

  3. Congrats on the book! Personal financial advice is definitely in the media zeitgeist right now, so I hope it leads to additional promotional and speaking opportunities for you. There is a new personal finance publication, Considerable, launching this month, and since it’s focused on people in 50’s and 60’s, they may like the “Groovy” reference.

    1. Thank you very much, Caroline. And thanks for the tip about Considerable. I already bookmarked their website.

Oh boy, I don’t know if Mr. Groovy would like speaking opportunities. I’ll just have to be the “woman behind the man” and give him a big push if those come his way.

  4. Love the cover! So cool 🙂

That is probably another bucket list of mine to write a book.

I think I am taking baby steps, first blogging and then maybe branch out to writing a book.

Congratulations on a huge achievement. I can only imagine what if must feel holding the product in your hands after countless hours of creating it.

    1. Thank you! Our illustrator, Madelyn Blank, did an awesome job with the cover and other images. And she happens to have the greatest mom — Laurie Blank, who commented earlier.

BTW we still can’t hold the book in our hands since it’s only digital. We may do a paperback version in CreateSpace. We’ll see.

    1. Thanks Mr. SSC!

Let’s add something else to the mix. Mr. Groovy has his bucket list trip to Notre Dame this week with his friends. However, we’ve got a hurricane brewing and his flight may be cancelled (he already received a notice). He also happens to be the one holding the tickets! AND, our builder has to do extra work to secure the house. Never a dull moment in Groovy Land.

  5. I just bought the kindle version…maybe I will read this Opus on my Hawaii trip next week. Nothing like sitting on an island and thinking of finances!

Well done sir! Writing a book has always been on my to do list.

    1. Thanks for buying the book. I’m dating myself but back in the day when I sat on beaches, I much preferred reading a Jacqueline Susann novel myself.

There’s nothing like writing a book. Just make sure your wife is up for it. 😉

    1. Thanks. We’re so glad you agreed to be a part.

Very sweet of you to buy the book — we’re still sending you a redemption code to a gift copy on Amazon (we’re waiting on them at the moment). But you can pass it along to someone else if you want.

    1. Thanks Mr. Saturday! It’s been a long time coming, indeed.
I think we may have mentioned this — I’m next up as author in the Groovy Guide series. But my book won’t be nearly as prolific.

  6. This is so awesome!!!! Big congrats! Crazy to think you’ve written a book!!

Well done! Looking forward to picking up a copy and reading it cover to cover!!

    1. Yahhhh — Luminary!

Well, we’ve exceeded your wildest imagination. We already have more than 10 purchases (wasn’t that your guess when a said a big fat zero?) 😁

  7. Very excited to read the book, just bought it! I am the other person that purchased from your store. Love the mug! I am mostly a stalker so first time posting. Love your blog.

    1. Thanks, AF! Hmmm…. a Groovy book tour. Let’s see…we haven’t killed each other yet building a house and living with parents. Could we make it through a book tour?

  8. YAY!!!! I’ve been SO excited for this launch. I know this book is going to help oodles of people recover from financial moronism. So excited for you guys!!
