Mrs. Groovy here. Just another day in paradise in NC. Hope y’all are doing well!

To those of you attending FinCon—have a wonderful time! We’ll see you next year if we’re still doing this blogging thingy. Who knows what the future holds for us two groovy cats.

Groovy Ranch

Work is moving along swimmingly at Groovy Ranch. The roofing guys are working on the metal roofs—we’re doing a screw-down metal roof over the garage and a standing-seam roof over the front porch. The supplier got it backwards and the workers arrived on site with the wrong materials. But they got it straightened out and began installing the screw-down materials on the garage roof.

Yesterday we met with Terry’s son Cameron to go over the layout for the closet shelves and rods. All shelving will be constructed of wood—Terry doesn’t even use MDF (medium density fiberboard), which you’d be lucky to get in a tract-built home in a subdivision. I’m gonna have me a house with NO wire shelving! That means no more tipped over ketchup and salad dressing bottles in the pantry!

Here’s a photo of the bi-fold doors in the master bedroom. You can also see that Terry and his crew have begun working on the trim and molding.

Terry’s still working on securing the material to create the shiplap accent wall surrounding our fireplace (in Ranch Update 27 we showed an image of what we’re looking for). Terry thought he located the correct material but it wasn’t fire retardant. And it wouldn’t come close to passing inspection. But he’s got something else up his sleeve he thinks will work.

Lastly, Terry constructed and added an architectural element to the exterior of the house that was called for in our plans. It’s a little accent piece that Mr. Groovy didn’t really care about, but I’m partial to it. I’ve since found out the element is called a gable bracket. You can see it at the top of this image.

Groovy Book

Since The Groovy Guide to Financial Independence published two weeks ago, Mr. Groovy has taped three podcast episodes. Listen for him in the coming weeks on Lifelong Learning with Kate Nesi, Stacking Benjamins with Joe Saul-Sehy (yes Mr. Groovy made a trip to the basement), and Countdown to FI with Mr. CTF. He has several additional interviews lined up. We’ll share more about them soon.

Thanks to Amy and Vicki for a fabulous book review on Women’s Money Talk. I’ve been linking to their book review as well as Josh’s fabulous write-up in my requests for podcast interviews for Mr. Groovy. Who needs a publicist when you’ve got Amy and Vicki and Josh in your corner? And another thank you to those of you who’ve put the book cover and link to Amazon on your site. That’s Amy and Vicki again, Ty from Campfire Finance, Claudia and Garret from Two Cup House, and Brad and Jonathan from Choose FI. You’ve all been incredibly generous in giving us valuable real estate on your sites. We really appreciate it.

  1. Your place is coming along so well. After we cut the cord, I stopped watching all of those DIY shows that I used to enjoy. This fills part of that niche for me.

Wood shelving is really nice. The house we purchased had full wood almost everywhere, and the kitchen cabinets are think real wood. Insomuch as the style/color is dated, the quality of the material prevents us from replacing it. At most, we will just paint it, but even then it’s a hard call. Admittedly, the linoleum floor will not stay!

    1. Our condo in Charlotte had very dated kitchen cabinets. We weren’t up for replacing them but we painted them a bright white. It made a huge difference — they looked very sharp. I hear you about linoleum. I grew up with linoleum and it never occurred to me how cheap it looked. I guess we’re a little jaded now that we’ve been indoctrinated by HGTV.

      Thanks for commenting!

  2. Loving the home progress. The question I have to ask, hows the build going compared to budget? I hear a lot of feedback that building a home always comes out over budget.

    1. The budget is going well. We’re a little under budget at the moment but that will be eaten up by our choice of cabinetry. In the end, we’ll probably be a little over but not by more than +/- $2,000.

  3. I tried not to read this post, but I couldn’t help myself. It doesn’t help when I look at the pictures, your house looks fab, and the gable bracket looks great.

Why didn’t I want to read it? Our story about our apartment build. It’s not a horror, but it’s taking so long compared to your build. We have a tiny apartment, in a block of only three apartments (there are two blocks so six apartments in total). We reserved in Feb 2016, and we’re hoping to get the keys at the beginning of December. It was meant to be Feb 2018, then Sept 2018, and it had better be well before Christmas. Grrrrr! The developer is also winding me up with the cost of any changes. Grrrrr again!

Sorry to be a moaner, I’m just green with envy🤢

I loved reading the book btw

    1. Thanks, David.
Is it that the build is taking long or that they got a delayed start? Or both maybe? The anticipation is tough. No worries about the moaning — you’ll be in your new place soon enough (I hope).

  4. Good to see how the home is coming along. This is great! Keep up the good work.

I also enjoyed the new book, though haven’t written a review yet….I hope it is selling well! Looking forward to hearing the podcasts.

  5. Love your home – it looks really good! Hope you’re still blogging a year from now and, most importantly, I hope we can both make it to FinCon19 so that I can finally meet the man with those velvety pipes, and his better half of course!

    1. We would love to meet you!

Someone in a Reddit forum mentioned Mr. Groovy and described him as kind of a libertarian nutter who sounds like Ray Romano.

    1. We think late October early November but we don’t know if there will be setbacks due to Hurricane Florence. I’ve heard that Duke/Progress (the company we need to use) is still behind on getting power back to folks who’ve lost it. We also have appliances and lighting on order with deliveries that could be affected.

  6. I LOVE the gable bracket, cool feature. Also, congrats on the successful launch of the book, exciting to see so many podcasts covering the launch, can’t wait to hear them! The book, btw, is extremely well written, with GREAT content for anyone figuring out how it’s done, from one who’s done it successfully!

    1. The gable bracket is just a small touch but it says “country” to me.

I’m so happy to hear you like the book. That’s a huge compliment coming from you!

    1. Thanks! Madelyn Blank did the artwork. She’s a great and talented young lady who happens to be our friend Laurie Blank’s (formerly of the Frugal Farmer) daughter!
