The national debt is up to $20 trillion. To pay that off, the federal government would have to run a $500 billion budget surplus every year for the next 40 years.
We are in a shitload of trouble.
The answer to this fiscal nightmare is rather straight forward. We got to pay a lot more in taxes, and we got to live with a lot fewer government services and benefits.
Now here’s a thought experiment for you. It’s easy to say the other guy should pay more in taxes and make do with less government. But what are you willing to give up? Can you come up with three give-backs that will hurt you and not just some other schnook?
To show what I mean, here are three give-backs that would definitely affect meโand not in a good way.
1. A 50% reduction in my Obamacare subsidies.
2. An end to the cost-of-living-adjustments for my New York State pension.
3. An end to the cost-of-living-adjustments for my Social Security benefits.
Ouch! Mrs. Groovy is already balking at my give-backs. She’s willing to give-back the mortgage interest deduction and the state and local property tax deductionโtwo give-backs we don’t use because we don’t itemize on our federal tax return.
Haha! Mrs. Groovy is discovering that it’s not so easy being part of the solution.
Okay, groovy freedomists, that’s all I got. What say you? What personal give-backs are you willing to offer? Let me know what you think when you get a chance. Peace.
Mrs. Groovy Says:
Oh great! Another week where you got nothing and half your nothing is about me. Way to go Mr. Groovy.
I’d gladly give up ALL of my Obamacare subsidy if the free market for health care was back in business, prices were transparent, there were no more penalties, and I could buy a normal health insurance policy.ย
