This Week in the Lives of Those Who Don’t Matter

Another week, another week of senseless violence brought to my smartphone via YouTube. Let’s recap:

1. Woman viciously cold-cocked.

2. Woman sexually assaulted and beaten in her own home by a stranger.

3. 7-year-old girl found dead.

4. 60-year-old woman murdered.

5. Two shot, one killed at a Detroit gas station.

6. Security guard killed for enforcing dress code.

7. Coast Guardswoman murdered in Jacksonville.

8. Two men shot while sleeping in their car.

9. Mother and daughters attacked and robbed for allegedly serving cold tacos.

10. 4-month-old survives gunshot to the head.

Sadness Squared

It’s sad enough that these horrendous crimes took place. It’s even sadder that our national media and leaders couldn’t give two shits about them.

These victims will forever remain local news stories. There will be no “mostly peaceful” protests for any of them. No athlete will kneel or boycott our national anthem on their behalf. No statues or murals will be produced to sear the ugliness of their victimization into our collective memory. No Congressperson will fulminate against the evildoers. And no celebrity or SJW will take to Twitter to virtue signal his or her disgust. Nope, the victims of these horrendous crimes will remain nameless and faceless statistics—as unimportant to us as they were the day before they crossed paths with savagery.

And the reason for this abject callousness is simple: it doesn’t fit the Woke agenda. Local crime victims only become fodder for national attention if they can be used to vilify the things our Woke Overloads despise—namely, white people, cops, and the Second Amendment. If local crime victims can’t be used to prove that “white supremacy” is running amok, that the cops need to be defunded, or that the Second Amendment is an antiquated relic that needs to be ripped out of our Constitution immediately, local crime victims remain nameless and faceless. Their lives simply don’t matter.

You’re Being Played

There is scum in every group and profession. There are scummy whites. And there are scummy blacks, Hispanics, and Asians. There are scummy cops. And there are scummy mechanics, teachers, and doctors.

Since there is no shortage of scummy people, our national media and leaders have great leeway in promoting any narrative they want. In other words, they can make any group or profession look bad.

Currently, our national media and leaders want you to think very poorly of white people, cops, and the Second Amendment. So they cull the local news stories that do just that.

White people, cops, and the Second Amendment aren’t above suspicion, of course. And if they are the primary cause of mayhem and violence in this country, they should be called out. But how closely does the Woke narrative comport with reality? Let’s see.

Maybe White Supremacy Isn’t the Problem

New York City has a wonderful resource called NYC Open Data. I used it to analyze the most serious violent crimes* reported to the police in the first three months of 2021. Here are the results for those crimes in which the race/ethnicity of the perpetrator is known:

White New Yorkers makeup 32.1 percent of the city’s population but only committed seven percent of the serious violent crimes. Black New Yorkers makeup 24.3  percent of the city’s population but committed 57.7 percent of the serious violent crimes.

New York City is hardly an anomaly. Go to the murder victims website gunmemorial.org and search any city. I searched the three cities I’ve lived in or near that weren’t New York. Here are the recent murder victims for Buffalo, Charlotte, and Raleigh.

There are a lot of black faces in those pictures. And since 90 to 95 percent of murders are intraracial—meaning white on white, black on black, etc.—maybe, just maybe, white supremacy isn’t nearly the problem our Woke Overlords say it is.

* Just so you know, I defined the following crime categories in the NYC Open Data crime records as “serious violent crimes.” Let me know if you think I erred.

Maybe Cops Aren’t the Problem

When you control for Hispanic ethnicity and police interaction (i.e., arrest rates), our police are remarkably neutral when it comes to killing people with black skin. Check it out. Using two police killing databases (see here and here) and FBI arrest data, I calculated the police killings per 100,000 arrests for our four major race/ethnic groups, and there’s virtually no difference between whites, Hispanics, and blacks—they’re all very close to the national average of 12.6. (Police killings are in parentheses after arrest count.)

I’m not saying that cops are saints. They have their share of bad apples and the overall quality of their policing needs improvement. I am saying, however, that our cops aren’t out to get black people. Yes, black Americans are overrepresented when it comes to police killings—they’re 13 percent of the population and account for 25 percent of police killings. But black Americans engage in far more criminal activity on a per capita basis than our other three groups. They are arrested roughly twice as often as white and Hispanic Americans, and they are arrested nearly ten times more often than Asian Americans (see table below). So maybe cops aren’t the problem. Maybe the problem is black America. If they weren’t overrepresented in criminal activity, they more than likely wouldn’t be overrepresented in police killings.

Quick aside: In any given year, cops kill twice as many whites as they do blacks (516 vs. 245). And yet, our national media and our vaunted leaders never make a stink over a cop-on-white killing. Apparently, there’s no white George Floyd or Breonna Taylor. Every cop-on-white killing is by the book and perfectly justified. Interesting.

Another quick aside: Imagine if our Woke Overlords held teachers to the same impossible standards they hold cops. A teacher in Minneapolis statutorily rapes one of his or her students, and the next thing you know, rage mobs are looting stores and vandalizing schools all across America. Then our glorious politicians enter the fray and accuse every teacher in America of being a sexual predator. And then they offer the only conceivable answer to the “systemic” sexual predation taking place in our schools: defund public education, of course. 

Maybe Guns Aren’t the Problem

Check out the following table. It was compiled using CDC data and shows the 2019 gun homicide rate for the four major race/ethnic groups in America.

If the Second Amendment and guns were as ill-suited to 21st century America as our Woke Overlords claim, why aren’t gun homicide rates more evenly distributed amongst the four major race/ethnic groups? Why does the black homicide rate blow away the white, Hispanic, and Asian homicide rates? We all live under the same gun laws, don’t we?

Now let’s add a twist to the above table. Let’s add the percentage of out-of-wedlock births for each group.

Do you notice a trend pattern? The higher the percentage of out-of-wedlock births, the higher the homicide rate.

So maybe the problem isn’t the Second Amendment and guns. Maybe the problem is out-of-wedlock births—or better yet, maybe the problem is out-of-wedlock births combined with a hip-hop culture that glorifies the gangsta lifestyle.

Final Thoughts

Okay, groovy freedomist, that’s all I got. What say you? I say all lives matter. Our Woke Overlords say the only lives that matter are the lives that advance the Woke agenda. So who do you believe?
